Community Service

Rotary's credo is "Service Above Self" and that's the guiding force behind our club. Whether it's donating dictionaries to disadvantaged local students, serving Meals on Wheels to the homebound elderly or disabled, or donating funds for Hurricane Katrina victims across the country and Tsunami victims across the globe, the Rotary Club of West Sacramento will do its part to make our community and world a better place.

Here are just a few examples from the past couple of years how we've answered the call for service above self:

Local Community Service

  • Provided scholarships to numerous high school students to further their education.
  • Paid for students to attend the RYLA youth leadership camp.
  • Donated hundreds of dictionaries to local school children and provided tutoring.
  • Served hundreds of meals and hundreds of Christmas presents to homebound seniors.
  • Participated in an Adopt-a-School programs to provide needed supplies.
  • Sponsored local essay and speech contests with cash prizes, and helped students to learn about “Service above Self.”
  • Invited students to the club to honor them for achievements and helped with their FFA projects.
  • Raised funds and built a beautiful clock tower in Clarksburg.
  • Turned an unsightly patch of dirt into the inviting "Rotary Park of West Sacramento."
  • Honored local teachers, firefighters and police officers for their often unrecognized community service above the call of duty.
  • Participated in numerous fundraising activities and projects throughout the year such as our Annual "Night at the Races" event in the Spring (see Calendar of Events) to help fund The West Sacramento Rotary Foundation.

National and International Service

  • Sponsored both inbound and outbound Rotary Youth Exchange Students
  • Helped fund Rotary International Foundation supporting Polio Plus, Study Exchanges, scholarships, etc.
  • Donated for water purification for Tsunami victims and villages in Turkey.
  • Conducted major "Operation Shoebox" effort to send gifts and supplies to Gulf troops, combined with inspirational letters of support from local school children.
  • Sent donations for Hurricane Katrina relief.
  • Sent volunteers and helped fund a Rotoplast mission with medical and non-medical volunteers in Karaikal , India to change the lives of 127 Indian patients with surgical procedures to repair cleft palate, cleft lip and provide plastic surgery for burn victims.
  • Provided medical supplies and volunteers for a Nicaraguan clinic for impoverished children and adults in desperate need.
